A thin vocal is a vocal that lacks energy between roughly 200 and 500 Hz. That band is where the body of a voice lives, the chest resonance that makes a singer sound close and warm. When it is missing, the voice turns papery: all consonants and air, no weight. The fix is a three step process. First repair the low mids with subtractive EQ and a careful low cut. Then add density with compression and saturation. Then build size with doubles and layers. This guide walks through each step with concrete settings you can copy into any DAW.
First, diagnose: is it the mix or the recording?
Before you reach for plugins, solo the raw vocal and listen on headphones. Ask one question: does the voice itself sound full, and only turn thin inside the mix? Or is it already thin on its own?
If the raw recording sounds full but disappears in the mix, you have a masking problem. Your instrumental is eating the same frequencies the voice needs, and the fix lives mostly in the arrangement and in EQ on the other tracks, not on the vocal.
If the raw recording is thin by itself, the cause is usually one of these:
Distance to the microphone. Every large diaphragm condenser has proximity effect: the closer the singer, the more low end the capsule picks up. A singer standing 40 centimeters away sounds dramatically thinner than the same singer at 10 to 15 centimeters. There is no plugin that truly puts back what distance took away.
An aggressive low cut. Many producers set a high pass filter at 150 or even 200 Hz out of habit, because some YouTube tutorial once said "always cut the lows". On a male vocal the fundamental sits around 100 to 150 Hz, on many female vocals around 160 to 250 Hz. A filter at 200 Hz can slice straight through the foundation of the voice.
A cheap or mismatched microphone. Small diaphragm and budget condensers often have a scooped low mid response. The singer can be world class and still come out sounding like a phone call.
The take itself. A singer holding back, singing quietly in falsetto territory when the song needs chest voice, will record thin no matter what gear is in front of them. No mixing move fixes a performance problem.
Be honest at this stage. If the source is broken, re-record it or start from a better vocal. Fixing it in the mix is possible up to a point, but you will always get further with two minutes of repositioning the microphone than with two hours of plugins.
Step 1: Repair the low mids with EQ
Open your EQ and start by removing what hurts instead of boosting what is missing. Boosting into a flawed recording amplifies its problems along with its body.
Set the high pass filter by ear, not by rule. Pull it up until the voice audibly loses weight, then back it down 20 to 30 Hz. For most male leads you will land between 70 and 100 Hz, for most female leads between 90 and 130 Hz. Find and cut the boxiness before you add warmth. Sweep a narrow bell between 400 and 700 Hz with a few dB of boost until the voice sounds like it is trapped in a cardboard box, then cut that spot by 2 to 4 dB with a medium Q. This sounds counterintuitive when the problem is thinness, but boxiness masks warmth. Removing it makes the real body audible again.
Then add body, gently. A wide bell of 1.5 to 3 dB somewhere between 180 and 350 Hz brings back chest. Wide and shallow is the rule: a 6 dB boost with a narrow Q turns thin into muddy, and muddy is worse. Move the frequency slowly while the whole mix plays, not just the solo vocal, and stop the moment the voice sits.
Tame the harshness that makes thinness obvious. A thin vocal usually also pokes at 3 to 5 kHz, because with no low mids to balance them, the presence frequencies dominate. A 1 to 2 dB cut around 3.5 kHz, or a soft dynamic band there, makes the voice rounder without dulling it.
One warning: do all of this with the instrumental playing. A vocal EQ that sounds perfect in solo is usually wrong in context, and the whole point of this exercise is how the voice sits against the track.
Step 2: Add density with compression and saturation
EQ shapes the balance of frequencies. What it cannot do is change the density of the sound, the feeling that every word carries weight. That is the job of compression and saturation.
Compress in two light stages instead of one heavy one. A single compressor doing 10 dB of gain reduction sounds squeezed and, ironically, thinner. Use two in series. The first one moves fast: ratio around 4:1, attack 3 to 10 ms, release around 100 ms, catching 3 to 5 dB on the loudest phrases. The second one moves slow: ratio 2:1, slower attack, and only 1 to 3 dB of reduction, gluing the level between phrases. Together they lift every syllable up to the same confident level, which the ear reads as fullness.
Saturate the low mids specifically. Saturation generates harmonics, and harmonics fill gaps in a spectrum. Tape emulation or a gentle tube stage on the vocal bus, driven just to the point where you hear thickness rather than distortion, adds the weight that EQ boosts cannot create because there is nothing there to boost. If your saturation plugin has a mix knob, blend it in at 20 to 40 percent. If you have a multiband saturator, drive only the band below 600 Hz and leave the top clean.
Try parallel compression for stubborn cases. Send the vocal to a bus with a compressor set absurdly hard, 10:1 and fast, crushing it completely, then blend that return quietly under the original. The crushed copy carries enormous density in the low mids, and mixed 10 to 15 dB below the lead it thickens without anyone hearing compression.
Step 3: Build size with doubles and layers
Here is the truth most tutorials skip: the full, wide, expensive vocal sound you hear on commercial records is rarely one voice. It is a stack. A lead, one or two tight doubles, harmonies above or below, sometimes an octave layer buried underneath. Thinness is often not a frequency problem at all, it is a loneliness problem.
Doubles. A real double, the same part sung again on a second track, panned slightly left and right under the lead, adds instant width and weight. The tiny timing and pitch differences between takes are exactly what creates the thickness. If you cannot record a double, duplicate the lead, shift one copy 15 to 30 ms, detune it 5 to 10 cents, and pan the pair. It is not as good as a sung double, but it works.
Harmonies. A third or a fifth above the lead, mixed 6 to 10 dB lower, fills the spectrum in a way no EQ can. Even one quiet harmony under the chorus changes a thin topline into a produced one.
An octave down layer. For choruses, a copy sung an octave lower, tucked far under the lead, adds chest weight that feels like part of the lead voice itself. Listeners never hear it as a separate part, they just hear a bigger singer.

The 10 minute checklist
Run through this in order the next time a voice sounds thin:
- Solo the raw vocal. Thin at the source? Fix the recording or pick a better one before mixing further.
- Check the high pass filter. By ear, not by rule. Most thin vocals hide a filter set far too high.
- Cut boxiness around 400 to 700 Hz before boosting anything.
- Add a wide, shallow body boost between 180 and 350 Hz, with the full mix playing.
- Compress in two light stages, then saturate the low mids to taste.
- Add at least one double or harmony layer. One quiet layer beats 6 dB of EQ.
- Check the instrumental. If pads, guitars or keys own the 200 to 500 Hz range, carve a few dB out of them right where the vocal needs to live.
When to stop mixing and change the vocal
Sometimes the honest answer is that the recording will never get there. A whispery take cannot become a chest voice performance, and a phone quality demo cannot become a release vocal.
